What is PlatePass?
PlatePass is an electronic toll payment solution that enables Budget Truck Rental customers to use cashless toll collection lanes or all-electronic tollways and bridges. Tolls are assessed when the toll authority’s technology obtains an image of the truck’s license plate. No additional equipment is required within the vehicle.

How much does PlatePass cost?
  • Customers will be billed an administrative fee, plus the cost of each toll at the toll authority’s highest undiscounted rate. Please check the rental agreement for details.
  • PlatePass charges usually appear on the customer’s credit card 1-3 weeks after the rental period has ended.

Why should customers use PlatePass?
Speed and Convenience:
  • PlatePass allows customers to use cashless tollways and bridges so they can arrive at destinations faster by bypassing backups at traditional cash toll booths.
No digging for exact change:
  • Electronic tolling means no cash or coins required so customers don’t have to keep change in the truck.
Ability to use all-electronic tollways and bridges:
  • No waiting in cash-only lanes.

Where is PlatePass available?
  • All-electronic tollways and bridges are indicated with toll authority signage.
  • PlatePass customers in Budget Truck Rentals are covered on all-electronic tollways and bridges in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington.
  • PlatePass customers in Budget Truck Rentals are also covered in transponder tolling regions, on tollways and bridges marked with E-ZPass or I-PASS signs.
  • Some tollways and bridges in the EZPass and iPass regions have lift gates requiring a transponder. As a result the PlatePass service will not work at these locations. Cash or credit card payment are accepted. Customers should check with the local toll authority for details.

What if a customer does not wish to use PlatePass?
  • Customers must pay cash for all tolls where available OR use a personal transponder that is functioning, fully funded and compatible with the tollway or bridge.
  • If customers incur tolls on all-electronic tollways and bridges without using a personal transponder, they will be automatically enrolled in PlatePass.

Can customers use a personal transponder to pay tolls in cashless lanes?
  • Yes, a customer can use their own functioning transponder if it is compatible with the tollway or bridge, properly mounted, and the account has sufficient funds.
  • If the customer’s transponder registers with the toll authority, a photo of the license plate will not be taken and PlatePass will not activate.

What happens if customers use tollways and bridges not covered by PlatePass?
  • Customers must pay cash or use a personal transponder compatible with the tollway or bridge, or use an alternative payment method approved by the toll authority (where permitted).
  • If customers do not pay for tolls with cash or a personal transponder, they will be issued a toll violation.
  • PlatePass is not available on tollways and bridges in Alabama, Alaska, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, California’s I-15 Express Lanes from SR 78 to SR 163 in San Diego, Washington’s SR-167 HOT Lanes, and on the tollways and bridges in the EZPass and iPass regions that have lift gates requiring a transponder.

What are all-electronic tollways and bridges?
  • All-electronic tollways and bridges operate using 100% electronic toll collection (also known as Open Road Tolling).
  • Drivers using all-electronic tollways or bridges do NOT have the option to pay tolls with cash.
  • Drivers using all-electronic tollways or bridges may see signs indicating vehicles without a compatible transponder will be billed for tolls by mail by the local toll authority, HOWEVER, toll authorities are unable to bill Budget Truck Rental customers directly.
